Have you heard about coconut oil? It’s all the rage right now, and we’re jumping right on board! Not only is it delicious in the kitchen (tried cooking with coconut oil? It’s pretty awesome), but the health benefits, especially to your skin, are undeniable.

So what is coconut oil? Coconut oil is made from the coconut plant, obviously, but the oil comes from the meat, or white portion of the coconut. The oil is made from the same portion of the coconut as coconut milk, and is then made into oil through either the expeller cold pressed process or through a heating process. Because the heating process can remove many of the nutrients that play such a key role in the effectiveness of coconut oil, you’ll want to look for the expeller cold pressed coconut oils, which are labeled as virgin and extra virgin coconut oils. They are packed with the most nutrients!

Now that you know what it is, how do you know it really works? Here are just some of the benefits:

Penetrates deep into the skin to moisturize

If there’s one thing that people can agree on when using coconut oil, it is that their skin has never felt so moist! Why? Coconut oil increases the lipid levels on the surface of your skin and provides deep hydration, which means your skin stays moist for the entire day.

Coconut oil is packed with vitamin E, and vitamin E is known for its anti-aging properties. It will penetrate the skin to both prevent and repair wrinkles and fine lines. Coconut oil is considered a good carrier for other oils, like essential oils.
